BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The UCLA women's cross country team placed 10th, while the UCLA men's team finished 25th at the Pre-NCAA Meet at the University of Indiana today.
Pacing the Bruin women to a 10th place showing (364 points) was sophomore Kate Vermeulen, who finished 50th on the 5,000m course with a time of 18:10.85. Sophomore Elaine Canchola was 53rd with a time of 18:12.29. Also racing for UCLA were junior Katie Nuanes (74th, 18:23.66), junior Kelly Cohn (75th, 18:24.36), sophomore Alynda Franco (126th, 18:50.49), senior Kara Barnard (141st, 18:59.55) and senior Melinda George (189th, 19:37.00).
Top-ranked Stanford won the meet with a team total of 77. Colorado State's Kara Wheeler placed first individually with a time of 17:07.03. The 22nd-ranked Bruins upset several higher-ranked teams such as No. 9 Villanova, No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 13 Minnesota, No. 14 Missouri, No. 15 Arizona and No. 17 Michigan State.
UCLA's men managed just one Top 100 individual finish, a 66th-place showing by senior Will Bernaldo (25:18.55 over the 8,000 meter course). Sophomore Bryan Green was UCLA's next-best finisher, placing 103rd (25:43.65).
The Stanford men completed the Cardinal sweep of the men's and women's races, placing first with 126 points. Oregon's Steve Fein placed first individually with a time of 24:06.31.
The course is the same one that will be used at the NCAA Championships Nov. 22.
