WESTWOOD - Senior Matt Armato scored three goals, while junior Adam Wright scored a pair as the second-ranked UCLA men's water polo squad defeated tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara 9-3 in an MPSF match-up at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center Sunday.
The victory propels the Bruins to an 11-2 overall record and a flawless 4-0 record in MPSF games. The Gauchos fall to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in MPSF action.
Armato set the tone for UCLA, scoring two goals in each of the Bruins' first two possessions of the game. Junior Andrew Bailey added another goal not quite a minute later to post an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
Also scoring goals for the Bruins were redshirt freshman Matt Flesher and juniors Sean Kern and Brian Brown. The UCLA defense stifled the Gaucho attack, allowing only four UCSB shots on goal. Brown had four steals in the game, while Kern, Armato and junior Blake Wellen each made three.
True freshman goalkeeper Brandon Brooks made the first start of his collegiate career, allowing three points and making two saves. Sophomores Amit Seker and Scott Miller accounted for UCSB's three points, including a two-pointer by Miller in the third quarter. UCSB goalkeeper Andrew Fedders registered 10 saves.
Next weekend, UCLA will travel to Malibu Saturday to face Pepperdine at noon before returning to campus Sunday for a noon match with the University of the Pacific at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
