BERKELEY, Calif. - Forward Jessica Winton scored her second goal of the game 55 seconds into the first overtime period to lift No. 12 UCLA to a 3-2 win over California Sunday at Edwards Stadium.
Winton received a long pass from Bree Edwards and beat Cal goalkeeper Maite Zabala for the game-winning goal.
The win improved the Bruins record to 12-3-1, 4-1-1 in the Pac-10, while the Bears fell to 10-6-1, 3-3 in the Pac-10. The Bears second overtime loss of the weekend puts them in a situation where they likely have to sweep their final three contests, which includes a game over No. 10 Stanford next week, to earn their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.
"We're a better team," said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. "We gave it to them. We totally quit.
"I think UCLA has a talented group of forwards. They kept pressing and got the win."
Cal jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when freshman defender Kim Stocklmeir delivered a perfect long cross to a streaking Natalie Stuhlmueller, who deposited the ball in the right side of the net.
Winton evened the score at one in the 25th minute when she scored off a long Skylar Little throw-in which got by the Cal defense.
The Bears reclaimed the lead at 2-1 at 34 minutes, 50 seconds when freshman forward Laura Schott dribbled on goal and crushed her team-leading ninth goal of the year. Schott now has a team-leading 23 points, which is the most by a Bear since Erika Hinton posted 23 in 1993.
That's where the game stayed until the closing minutes as UCLA got off an array of shots, and finally burst through with the game-tying goal with 10 ticks left on the clock. The Bruins held a 20-8 advantage on shots for the game.
Cal looks to get back on track when it visits conference leader Stanford (13-3, 6-0) Friday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
