Westwood, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team, ranked No. 2 by Soccer America, won its 11th straight game, defeating San Diego State 2-0 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game today at UCLA's North Athletic Field. The win keeps UCLA's unbeaten league record intact at 6-0. The Bruins are 13-1 overall.
After playing to a scoreless first half, UCLA struck first in the second period. After Shea Travis sent a cross to Ryan Futagaki on the left side, Futagaki sent a diving header towards Pete Vagenas in front of the goal. Vagenas sent a header of his own into the net for the game-winner at 57:48.
Defender Ryan Lee added an insurance goal at 79:21, taking a rebounded shot from Jimmy Frazelle and driving it in for his second goal of the season. Bruin goalkeeper Nick Rimando picked up his second consecutive and fifth overall shutout of the season. He made four saves in the contest. San Diego State keeper Brian Barnes made eight saves on 21 Bruin shots.
For the second straight game, the Bruins were playing without three key starters - defender Carlos Bocanegra (arthroscopic knee surgery), midfielder Shaun Tsakiris (ill) and forward McKinley Tennyson, Jr. (ill).
"Unfortunately, it took us a little while to get motivated again," said UCLA head coach Todd Salda?a. "Basically, we turned it on in the second half and played much better. We created a lot more chances and had better intensity in the second half and created some chances for ourselves to score goals."
UCLA's record improves to 13-1-0, 6-0-0 in the MPSF. San Diego State falls to 4-11-0, 0-4-0 in the conference. The Bruins are in action next week, hosting the Pacific Soccer Classic on Friday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 31. Playing in the Classic are UCLA, Virginia, Cal State Fullerton and Air Force.
