WESTWOOD, Calif. - After playing to sudden death overtime, the No. 14 UCLA Bruins (15-4-1) defeated No. 20 University of San Diego (16-5) 2-1 today in the second round of the 1999 NCAA Tournament.
UCLA freshman Jessica Winton put the game away in the fourth minute of overtime when she fired in a shot from 10 yards out. Forward Tracey Milburn was credited with the assist.
The game was a tale of two halves. In the first half of play, the Bruins dominated the game, holding USD to only one shot. UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when forward Staci Duncan flipped a pass to midfielder Venus James, who pushed the ball into the net from 12 yards out.
In the second half, USD came up strong, delivering nine shots and holding UCLA scoreless. The Toreros tied up the score with 53:04 on the clock when they were awarded a penalty kick after UCLA's Karissa Hampton was called for a hand ball in the box. Defender Heather Swanson took the kick for the Toreros, sending her shot into the top right corner of the net.
"UCLA came on strong and scored two beautiful goals that were very difficult to stop, " said San Diego head coach John Cossaboon. "UCLA well-deserved the lead at the half, and we did well to come back and tie. All the credit goes to UCLA - they are a great team. "
"San Diego played very well today," UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis said. "They had the better of us in the second half. The penalty kick sort of shifted the tides and gave them momentum, but we had the better first half. It was a hard fought battle."
The Bruins advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, where they will meet the undefeated Santa Clara Broncos (21-0) on Saturday, November 20 at 1 pm at Buck Shaw Stadium.
"I'm excited," Ellis said, speaking of next week's game against Santa Clara. "I like our role as the underdog. This team (UCLA) likes the role of hunting down rather than being hunted."
