Westwood, Calif. - The pre-season No. 4 UCLA women's basketball team defeated SBC Prerov from Slovakia 93-71, in an exhibition match-up in front of 510 at Pauley Pavilion.

Senior All-American forward Maylana Martin made her first appearance in the 1999-2000 season after undergoing back surgery in May. Martin showed no ill effects from the surgery, scoring a team-high 23 points and adding 10 rebounds.

Freshman Nicole Kaczmarski shot 7-10 from the field en route to 17 points with six assists. Also scoring in double figures were Carly Funicello with 13 and five rebounds, Michelle Greco with 12 points and seven rebounds and Marie Philman with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Jana Stejskalova led Slovakia with 23 points. Petra Prochazkova had 16, and Kamila Hlavackova added 12.

The Bruins held a dominating 51-30 rebounding edge and had as many offensive rebounds (24) as Slovakia had defensive boards. Center Janae Hubbard led all players with 12 rebounds.

Slovakia kept it close early in the first half, cutting a 28-19 UCLA lead to 30-26 with 5:53 to play after a Jana Hradilova layup, but the Bruins pulled away with a 20-4 run to close the half with a 50-30 halftime lead.

UCLA opens the 1999-2000 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Four in the Fall Tournament in Lubbock, Texas. UCLA's opponent will be announced on Monday. The Four in the Fall will be televised live on Lifetime TV.
