Westwood, Calif. - The 12th-ranked UCLA men's basketball team defeated the California All-Stars, 83-73, in an exhibition match-up in front of 5,510 at Pauley Pavilion.

Junior guard Earl Watson led four Bruins in double-figure scoring with 19 points. He also contributed five assists and four steals in 38 minutes of play. Sophomore center Jerome Moiso added 18 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Freshman forward Jason Kapono contributed 17 points and five rebounds, while JaRon Rush added 10 with six rebounds and four steals.

The California All-Stars were led by Gaylon Young, who scored 21 points and six rebounds. Former Bruin star Charles O'Bannon added 20 points and six rebounds in his return to Pauley Pavilion.

The All-Stars matched UCLA step for step in the first half and went into the locker room at halftime tied at 42. The Bruins started to pull away in the second half, going on a 13-0 run to take a 63-49 lead with 10:47 to play. The All-Stars answered with a 20-4 run to take a 69-67 lead with 5:28 to play and then led with 3:04 to play, 73-72. But UCLA took the lead for good at 2:27 on a Moiso layup before Watson hit a 21 foot fall-away three pointer with the shot clock expiring to give the Bruins a 77-73 lead. UCLA closed the game with a 11-0 run.

UCLA opens the 1999-2000 regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 23 against Fairfield. The game is the second in a doubleheader with the UCLA women's team, which faces Texas at 6:00 pm in Pauley.
