The first weekend in November will be a busy one in Westwood. Many of UCLA's athletic teams will be hosting important contests in their respective sports.
On Friday night at 7:30 p.m., the U.S. National Women's Basketball team will play an exhibition game against the UCLA women's team. In 1998-99, the Bruins finished 26-8, won their first Pac-10 title and reached the NCAA Elite Eight. With all five starters returning, UCLA has been ranked among the nation's top five teams by most pre-season publications.
At 7:00 p.m. the men's volleyball team will be hosting Long Beach State in a pre-season match in the John Wooden Center.
Away from campus, the women's volleyball team, 13-0 in Pac-10 action, plays at Stanford (11-1 in the Pac-10) in a match which will be televised live by Fox Sports Net (7:30 p.m.). The women's swimming and diving teams will be competing at the SMU Invitational in Dallas, the men's tennis team will be competing all weekend in the Rolex Regionals in Malibu and the men's golf team will be competing in the Golf World Invitational in Hilton Head, SC.
Saturday on campus begins with women's gymnastics. The "Meet the Bruins" exhibition will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Wooden Center. At 3:00 p.m., the men's water polo team, 15-2 this season, hosts the Stanford Cardinal (16-2) at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center pool. The two schools are both ranked No. 1 in the latest poll. At 4:00 p.m., the men's and women's basketball teams will participate in the annual UCLA Basketball Preview Day. The busy Saturday concludes with a 7:00 p.m. pre-season match between the men's volleyball teams of Stanford and UCLA in Pauley Pavilion.
Away from campus, the women's swimming and diving teams will be competing in LaJolla against UC San Diego and the University of San Diego, and the women's volleyball team plays at California.
The weekend concludes with a soccer doubleheader on Sunday. At 10:30 a.m., the women's soccer team, 13-4-1 and ranked No. 20, hosts crosstown rival USC, 14-4 and ranked No. 11, on the North Athletic Field. It is the final regular season game for both schools (the NCAA tournament bracket will be announced on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.).
At 1:00 p.m., the men's soccer team, 15-1 and ranked No. 2 in the nation, hosts southern California rival Cal State Fullerton, 14-4 and ranked No. 13, with the Pacific Division title of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on the line. UCLA is 6-0 and Cal State Fullerton is 5-1 in conference play.
