LOS ANGELES - Three-time defending national collegiate champion UCLA dominated No. 7 University of Hawaii today in the Bruins' 1999 home opener, earning a 10- 4 victory.
The Bruins were led in scoring by freshmen Elaine Zivich (Lompoc) and Jenny Lamb (Huntington Beach), who each netted two goals. A total of eight players tallied points for UCLA.
UCLA's stifling defense was guided by junior netkeeper Erin Golaboski (Severna Park, MD), who held the Rainbow Wahine scoreless in the second half. Golaboski, who was ejected with 33 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, had six saves.
The Rainbow Wahine put four points on the scoreboard, two from sophomore Robin Jones, and one each from senior Michele Wong and junior Katie Hill. Freshman goalkeeper Christa Tackaberry grabbed two saves.
Today's match-up marks the second meeting between UCLA and Hawai'i in the '99 campaign. At the UC San Diego Tournament on March 13, the Bruins defeated the Rainbow Wahine 7-4. Today's win increases UCLA's record to 7-5 overall, with its MPSF record remaining at 1-1. The Bruins have outscored their '99 opponents 80-58. With the loss today, Hawai'i falls 11-6 overall, with its MPSF record remaining at 1-1.
UCLA will return to the pool this weekend for two MPSF conference matches. On Saturday, March 6, the Bruins host rival USC at noon. On Sunday, the Bruins meet up with the Rainbow Wahine again for a 12 noon conference match. Both events will be held at the Men's Gym Pool.
