WESTWOOD, Ca.-- Three-time defending national champion UCLA lost a 7-6 overtime game (in water polo, overtime consists of two three-minute quarters, then moves into sudden death if the score remains tied) to the No. 1 USC Trojans.
The Trojans led 5-1 at halftime, but the Bruins came back in the second half, scoring four goals. The rival Trojans were held scoreless in the second half, leaving the score tied at 5 at the end of the fourth quarter.
After a scoreless overtime, the score was still tied at 5. In the second overtime, USC freshman Nina Wengst (Germany) notched a goal but UCLA freshman Elaine Zivich (Lompoc) answered, scoring a goal with 1:03 left on the clock. It looked like the game would go into sudden death, but USC freshman Suzannah Johnson (San Jose) notched the winning goal with one second remaining.
Zivich led the Bruins with three goals and junior netkeeper Erin Golaboski (Severna Park, MD) pulled down 10 saves. The Trojans were paced by freshman Nina Wengst, who tallied three goals. Senior goalkeeper Bernice Orwig (Anaheim) had 12 saves for USC.
Today's match, a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference game, increases USC's record to 12-1 overall and 3-1 in MPSF action. UCLA's record now stands at 7-6 overall and 1-2 in MPSF play.
The Bruins are in action again tomorrow with a 12 noon MPSF game versus No. 7 Hawai'i at the Men's Gym Pool.
