The Washington baseball team used five home runs, including two from senior Pete Orgill, to hand UCLA a 12-5 loss Sunday in a Pac-10 Conference game at Husky Ballpark.
With the win, the Huskies (14-8 overall, 3-2 Pac-10) have a 2-0 edge in the three-game series, and have taken sole possession of third place in the Pac-10. UCLA fell to 15-19 overall, 1-4 in the Pac-10.
UW sophomore Jeff Carlsen (4-0) went the distance to earn the victory. The righty from Poulsbo, Wash., allowed four earned runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out five. The complete game was the first of the year by a UW pitcher.
Bruin starter Josh Karp (3-3), a highly-touted freshman from Bothell, Wash., threw three and one-third innings in the loss. The big right-hander gave up eight runs, all earned, on 10 hits.
UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Bill Scott homer, his ninth. But in the bottom of the first, Orgill and Daniel Jahn each hit two-run homers to highlight a five-run inning. Orgill, starting at first base for injured Ed Erickson, belted his second of the game in the fourth inning off of reliever Ryan Carter.
Marc Rittenhouse, who also had two doubles, a single and four runs, hit his first home run of the year in the fifth inning and right fielder Tyson Boston belted his second in the eighth.
Scott, shortstop Jack Santora and catcher Jason Green each had three hits to lead UCLA's offense.
The Huskies and Bruins close out the three-game series Monday at 2:00 p.m. Washington's six-game homestand wraps up Tuesday night with a 6:30 p.m. game vs. Lewis-Clark State. PLEASE NOTE that some earlier schedules listed the L-C State game on Wednesday, the 31st. It is on March 30.
