
Men's Volleyball Defeats Gauchos in League Opener

LOS ANGELES -- Defending NCAA men's volleyball champion UCLA swept UC Santa Barbara Wednesday in the MPSF opener for both teams before 793 fans at Pauley Pavilion.
The No.1 ranked Bruins, 1-0 overall and in league play, won 15-2, 15-6, 15-11 in 80 minutes. UCLA held UCSB to an attack percentage of .064 largely as the result of 35 digs and five service aces.
Senior Fred Robins and junior Evan Thatcher each spiked nine kills to lead the Bruins. Senior Danny Farmer and sophomore Mark Williams added eight kills apiece, and junior Matt Grace, substituting for Adam Naeve in the third game, added five kills in eight attempts off the bench.
Junior Rick Rauth led the Gauchos, 0-1 in league play, with nine kills.
The Bruins will travel to the 35th Annual UCSB/Elephant Bar and Restaurant Invitational, Jan. 15-16 before visiting Hawaii for the Outrigger Invitational Tournament, Jan. 20-22. They return home Jan. 27 for a league match against fourth-ranked Pepperdine.
