Bruins Hand Adams His 1,000th Victory

TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman right-hander Josh Karp went 8.1 solid innings and senior catcher Jason Green doubled twice and homered as UCLA handed head coach Gary Adams his 1,000th career victory, a 6-1 triumph at Arizona Saturday afternoon. Adams is 1,000-726-12 in 30 seasons as a head coach.
UCLA improved to 15-14 on the season, while Arizona fell to 17-9. Both schools are 1-1 in Pac-10 play.
Karp scattered eight hits while holding the Cats to just one run, a sixth-inning homer to center by senior second baseman Andy Juday. Sophomore lefty Bobby Roe came on to record the last two outs in the ninth.
Green combined with freshman third baseman Randall Shelley for six of the Bruins' 11 hits. Shelley gave UCLA the lead for good with a seventh-inning run-scoring single.
Arizona's junior center fielder Rafell Jones hit in his 16th consecutive contest.
The two teams conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sancet Field.
