Los Angeles - The UCLA Bruins recorded a season-low two hits in a 4-1 loss at USC Friday night. The Trojans (30-20 overall, 15-4 Pac-10) stayed tied for first place in the Pac-10 with Stanford. The Bruins (24-26, 8-8) had their seven-game Pac-10 win streak come to an end.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on UCLA sophomore 3B Nick Lyon's two-out homer to center field, his second of the year. The only other hit that Zito allowed also came in the second inning, a two-strike single up the middle by sophomore cf Charles Merricks. Zito stymied the Bruins with 16 strikeouts.
Sophomore lhp Ryan Carter almost single-handedly kept the Bruins in the game with a gutsy seven-inning outing. The big southpaw threw a UCLA season-high 142 pitches to the Trojans, allowing just three earned runs and striking out five. However, the Bruins couldn't muster any offense against the Trojans, spoiling a great performance by Carter and dropping him to 1-7 on the year. What makes Carter's outing even more remarkable is the fact that he was a "game-time" decision for the UCLA coaching staff.
Three notable hitting streaks came to an end: USC sophomore SS Seth Davidson at 12 games and UCLA sophomores Chase Utley and Garrett Atkins at 15 games each.
USC and UCLA meet again on Saturday and Sunday (May 1-2), both at 1 p.m., at Dedeaux Field.
