Honolulu, HI - Led by Maylana Martin's 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds, the No. 12 UCLA womens basketball team earned an 85-67 first-round victory Friday over No. 24 Nebraska in the opening day of competition at the Rainbow Wahine Basketball Classic. With the victory, UCLA (2-2) moves into the second round and will face No. 5 North Carolina on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Hawaii time. The Tar Heels advanced with a 77-67 win over St. Johns prior to UCLA's game.
Martin, a junior forward from Perris, Calif. who was 6-for-10 from the field, including four free throws, was one of four Bruins to reach double- figures on the afternoon. Marie Philman (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) and Janae Hubbard (Fresno, Calif./Fresno HS) put in 15 apiece, and LaCresha Flannigan (San Bernardino, Calif./San Bernardino HS) provided a spark off the bench, scoring 10 points. Freshman Michelle Greco (LaCrescenta, Calif./ Crescenta Valley HS) finished just shy of the double-figure plateau with nine points.
Nebraska came out strong in the first half behind Nicole Kubik, who scored nine of Nebraska's first 11 points, giving the Huskers an early 11-6 advantage. However, a three pointer by Erica Gomez (Keyport, NJ/St. John Vianney HS) with 11:08 to play in the first half, gave the Bruins an 18-17 advantage and the lead for good. A Flannigan layup with 5:53 to play gave UCLA a 28-point advantage (79-51), its largest lead of the game.
Nebraska was led in scoring by Brooke Schwartz, who was 8-for-17 from the field with four three pointers, for a game-high 22 points. She was followed by Kubik, Nebraska's only other player in double-figures, who put in 20.
UCLAs meeting with North Carolina on Saturday will mark the fourth time in five games this season that the Bruins have faced a top-25 opponent. Prior to Friday's contest with the No. 24 Huskers, UCLA faced No. 17 Notre Dame and No. 4 Connecticut.
