WESTWOOD, Calif. - The No. 15 UCLA women's soccer team defeated UC Irvine 2-0 tonight in UCLA's home opener. The Bruins received second-half goals from sophomore midfielder Lauren Emblem and junior midfielder/forward Venus James to secure the victory.
After a scoreless first half, Emblem struck first in the 62nd minute, blasting a shot from the box that hit the top of the post and went in for her first goal of the season. James scored an insurance goal in the 74th minute when she received a pass from Krista Boling and knocked it past Irvine goalkeeper Allison Merrick.
The Bruin defense allowed only two shots in the entire game, and Bruin keeper Lindsay Culp needed to make just one save. Merrick made five off 13 Bruin shots.
UCLA's record is now 5-1-0 and the Anteaters fall to 3-3-1.
The Bruins continue home action next week when they host Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo on Wednesday, Sept. 22 for a 7:30 pm game at Spaulding Field.
