Bruins Win Cross Country Opener

LOS ANGELES - Both UCLA's men's and women's cross country teams won their season opening meetrunning to victory at the CS Fullerton Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 4). The race was held at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea.
In the women's team standings (16 teams), the Bruins won with 18 points, followed by San Diego State (105), UNLV (107), Concordia (108) and Long Beach State (146). Individually, Bruin sophomore Elaine Canchola won the 5,000m race in a time of 17:41.20. The Bruins had four other runners in the Top 10--2. junior Kelly Cohn (17:42.70), 3. senior Kara Barnard (17:54.10), 6. junior Katie Nuanes (18:11.00), 8. senior Melinda George (18:25.80) and 10. sophomore Alynda Franco (18:31.10).
In men's team standings (10 teams), UCLA won with 44 points, followed by CS Fullerton (56), Cal Poly-Pomona (97), Long Beach State (98) and UC San Diego (119). Individually, UCLA senior Dan Brecht placed second (25:37.40), behind winner, UC San Diego's James Nielsen (25:16.30). The Bruins had one other runner in the Top 10, junior Scott Abbott, who placed sixth (25:53.60).
