The 14th-ranked UCLA women's basketball team outscored USC by 15 points in the second half and cruised to an 82-62 victory at Pauley Pavilion, the Bruins' fourth win in a row.
UCLA (9-4, 3-0) led 40-35 at halftime then opened the second half with a 19-4 run that put the Bruins ahead, 59-39 with 12:43 to play. The Bruins held the Women of Troy (7-6, 2-1) to just 29.4% shooting in the second half and 35.9% in the game. The Bruins also forced 24 turnovers.
"I felt we did a better job executing in the second half," said UCLA head coach Kathy Olivier. "We took our time more in the second half and executed better."
Said USC head coach Chris Gobrecht, "We didn't come out strong in the opening of the second half. We played timid defensively. Our team missed a ton of free throws (6-12 in the second half, 14-24 for the game). If we had hit our free throws, we could've stayed in the game."
Forward Maylana Martin led the Bruins with 20 points and 10 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season. Martin shot 7-12 from the field and also made three steals and blocked two shots. Center Janae Hubbard scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Guards Nicole Kaczmarski (18 points, four steals) and LaCresha Flannigan (10 points) also scored in double figures.
Martin's 20 points moved her past Natalie Williams onto third place on UCLA's all-time scoring charts with 1,817. She also moved into 11th on the all-time Pac-10 scoring list.
Center Danielle Golay led USC with 20 points. Denise Woods contributed 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The win was UCLA's fifth consecutive over USC, and the game was played in front of the fourth-largest women's crowd at Pauley Pavilion - 7,787. The Bruins now stand alone atop the Pac-10 standings with a 3-0 conference record.
