LOS ANGELES (AP) - No. 10 UCLA took control over Oregon State in the second half, and unexpectedly extended its lead in the Pacific-10 Conference in the process.
Maylana Martin and Marie Philman keyed 9-0 and 8-0 second-half runs as the Bruins overcame a slow start and beat Oregon State 83-60 Thursday night for their seventh straight victory.
"We're playing a lot better together," said Philman, who scored eight of her 10 points in the second half. "We're anticipating each other's passes. We're coming together."
UCLA (12-4, 6-0 Pac-10) increased its conference lead over Oregon and Stanford to two games as both the Ducks and the Cardinal were upset Thursday night. The Bruins play host to Oregon Saturday.
Martin scored 16 points, while reserves LaCresha Flannigan and Carly Funicello each added 11 for UCLA, which led 41-37 at halftime. Erica Gomez scored 10 and had nine assists for the Bruins.
UCLA surrendered the game's first six points. Its biggest deficit was 18-11, 8:10 into the game, before scoring eight unanswered points to take the lead for the first time, 19-18, 9:44 before halftime. Funicello capped the spurt with a three-point play.
Reda Petraitis' three-point play pulled Oregon State within three, 45-42, with 15:01 left in the game, before UCLA took a double-digit lead it would never relinquish.
Martin began the 9-0 run with a three-point play and followed with a layup, and Philman added two layups.
Flannigan began the next run with a layup, and Nicole Kaczmarksi capped it with two free throws off Ericka Cook's technical foul.
"We missed some very crucial layups at the start of the second half," Beavers coach Judy Spoelstra said. "Missing layups allowed them to get quick rebounds and run."
Petraitis scored 15 points for Oregon State (7-11, 3-3) while Chassie Wiersma added 13 and Felicia Ragland 10. The Beavers have lost their last eight games against UCLA and trail the series, 24-10.
Martin's 16 points left her needing 18 to pass Rehema Stephens and move into second place on the school's all-time scoring list.
