LOS ANGELES -- The UCLA women's basketball team opened Pac-10 Conference play with a 90-54 victory over Washington on Friday evening in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins opened with a first half shooting percentage of 52.8 percent from the floor and never looked back.
At halftime, UCLA led 44-32, but came out of the gate hot in the second half. The Bruins opened with a 12-0 run that included 10 consecutive points by freshman guard Nicole Kaczmarski on two three pointers, two free throws and a jumper on the breakaway. Washington was unable to score until nearly five minutes into the half, when Melissa Erickson ended the drought at 15:08. UCLA also posted 6-0 and 10-0 runs during the second half.
The Bruins had five players score in double figures, led by Kaczmarski with 17. Janae Hubbard was the team's leading rebounder with nine rebounds, leaving her just one board away from UCLA's career top-10. Hubbard now has 651 career rebounds.
Washington's Loree Payne matched Kaczmarski's point total, also checking in with 17 points. Megan Franza, was held below her Pac-10 leading average of 20.9 points per game, but did finish with 16 points. Finally, center LeAnn Sheets double-doubled with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams continue Pac-10 play on Sunday, when Washington travels to USC, and Washington State comes to Pauley Pavilion for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
