Bloomington, IN - The second-seeded and third-ranked UCLA Bruins dominated the No. 15 seed Michigan Wolverines, defeating them 15-2 Friday at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center in the first game of the 2000 Collegiate Nationals hosted by the University of Indiana.
The Wolverines were outmatched from the start. UCLA's stifling defense prevented Michigan from taking any shots in the first half, while the Bruin offense exploded with 11 first half goals.
In the third quarter, Michigan's Melissa Karjala scored two goals, which later proved to be the Wolverines' only points of the match, to UCLA's one. The Bruins closed in on the victory after registering three more goals in the final chapter.
UCLA was led in scoring by sophomore Elaine Zivich who had four goals, followed by sophomore Eleanor Murphy who had three and and Kelly Heuchan and Maureen Flanagan who each had two. Catharine von Schwarz, Erin Golaboski, Ashley Stachowski and Serela Kay capped off the scoring for the Bruins, each adding a goal apiece.
The Bruins return to action at 1:00 pm Pacific time to battle the winner or the UC Davis/Long Beach State match. Saturday, May 6, UCLA will likely face No. 3 seed California beginning at 2 pm Pacific time.
Friday's matches are played at two sites: the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis and the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
