  • Lisa Fernandez (1990-1993) was selected the USOC Female Athlete of the Month for July after she tossed three-consecutive perfect games in July on the Central Park to Sydney tour. Fernandez struck out 20-of-21, 19-of-21 and 19-of-21 batters. Only five batters managed to put the ball in play and all were groundouts in the infield. Fernandez is also leading the hitters at the plate with a .448 batting average and has an on-base percentage of .542.

  • Sean Kern (1997-pres.) scored a goal, and Dan Hackett (1988-1991) made 13 saves to lead the U.S. Olympic Team to a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over Hungary.

  • Dan Hackett (1988-1991) was named the Most Outstanding Goalkeeper at the Italian Trophy Tournament. Over four games in the net for the U.S., Hackett amassed 38 saves, averaging 9.5 per game. He had a pair of 12 save games, collecting eight and six in the other two.

  • Ante Razov (1992-1995) scored two goals to lead the Chicago Fire to a 3-1 win over the MetroStars.

    Beach Volleyball

  • Holly McPeak (1990)/Misty May placed fourth at the Japan Open and have moved into second place on the U.S. Olympic Qualification Rankings. They can clinch an Olympic berth next weekend in China with a medal finish.

  • UCLA junior Josh Karp tossed six innings of six-hit ball, allowing one earned run, to help Team USA defeat Italy, 5-2, in the Haarlem Baseball Week Tournament in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The right hander struck out six and walked one.

  • Travis Rettenmaier (2000-pres.) defeated Matt Lockin of Liburn, Ga. 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of the USTA Boy's 18s National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. Rettenmaier, seeded 12th, will take on Brandon Gill in the third round on Sunday.

  • Miami Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rimando (1997-1999) not only preserved a 3-1 victory over defending MLS Champion D.C. United, but he also assisted on the game's final goal of the game in the 90th minute. Rimando made two saves in the contest.
  • Sasha Victorine (1996-1999) scored the game's first goal, his second of the season, to help the Los Angeles Galaxy defeat Western Division leaders Kansas City, 5-1. Paul Caligiuri (1982-1986) and Greg Vanney (1993-1995) combined to assist on the game-winning goal in the 70th minute, and Caligiuri added another goal in the 74th minute. Matt Reis (1994-1997) picked up the victory and made three saves.

    Beach Volleyball

  • Karch Kiraly (1979-1982)/Adam Johnson placed fifth at the Austria Open to improve their position on the United States' Olympic Qualification Ranking list for the 2000 Sydney Games. Kiraly/Johnson moved into second and could clinch an Olympic berth with a third-place showing in Belgium next week. Kevin Wong (1992-1995)/Rob Heidger clinched an Olympic berth after Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana could not improve their point total. Wong/Heidger are guaranteed of finishing no worst than second on the Olympic Qualification Ranking list. Meanwhile, Sinjin Smith (1976-1979)/Carl Henkel (1988-1991) were eliminated from Olympic consideration after placing seventh at the Austria Open. Smith/Henkel needed to post podium finishes in the last two events to qualify.
  • At the Japan Open, Holly McPeak (1990)/Misty May defeated teams from Japan and Australia to advance to their sixth FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour semi-final in eight starts together this season. With their two wins Saturday, McPeak/May regained the No. 2 spot on the United States' Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) list that will determine America's two women's entries for the 2000 Sydney Games next month on Bondi Beach. They can clinch the second spot by finishing second or better Sunday. Liz Masakayan (1982-1985)/Elaine Youngs (1988-1992) did not improve their qualification total after finishing seventh. Annett (Buckner) Davis (1991-1994)/Jenny Johnson Jordan (1992-1995) finished the Open tied for fifth.

  • Heather Compton (1982-1985) of the Ohio Pride improved her record to 5-1 after posting a 1-0 victory over the Akron Racers. Compton pitched all nine innings, allowing only two hits, the last one coming in the sixth inning. She struck out seven and walked just one.

  • Karch Kiraly (1979-1982)/Adam Johnson improved their Olympic qualification ranking after posting two victories in the main draw of the Austria Open. Sinjin Smith (1976-1979)/Carl Henkel (1988-1991) went undefeated in the opening round, including a 15-2 upset over fifth-seeded Jorre Kjemperud and Vegard Hoidalen of Norway.
  • Four USA women's teams went undefeated in the opening day of the Japan Open, including Annett (Buckner) Davis (1991-1994)/Jenny Johnson Jordan (1992-1995), Liz Masakayan (1982-1985)/Elaine Youngs (1988-1992) and Holly McPeak (1990)/Misty May.

Fernandez has now pitched 30 consecutive innings of perfect softball, and pitched her most recent perfect game in an 11-0 win against the Texas All-Stars. Also in that doubleheader, Jennifer Brundage (1992-95) hit a three-run home run.

  • Forrest Johnson (1998-2000) of Oneonta (A, Detroit Tigers) was 2-for-4 with a triple, a sacrifice fly, three RBI and two runs scored in Oneonta's 11-3 victory Auburn.
  • Bill Haselman (1986-1987) of the Texas Rangers was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Texas's 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
  • Eric Byrnes (1995-1998) of Sacramento (AAA, Oakland 's) was 2-for-4 with an RBI in Sacramento's 4-2 victory over Edmonton.

  • Former associate head coach Willette White was named the head women's coach at Northeastern University, becoming the first African-American female head coach in the school's history. Former Bruin assistant coach Molly Tuter was earlier in the summer named the No. 2 assistant at UC Irvine.

Kiraly and Johnson opened the day with a hard-fought 17-16 win over the Swiss team of Sascha Heyer and Martin Walser. They followed with a 15-1 drubbing of the Czech Republic team of Milan Dzavoronok and Marek Pakosta.

  • UCLA junior pole vaulter Tracy O'Hara was selected to represent the U.S. at the NACAC Athletic Championships, August 3-5, in Monterrey, Mexico. The competition is open to athletes under 25 years of age.

Weiman struck out six, walked one and allowed just three hits in seven innings pitched to post the complete-game shutout. She ranks first in the WPSL with 61 strikeouts in 73 innings pitched.
