Westwood, CA - In the first-ever soccer game played at Frank W. Marshall Field at Drake Stadium, the pre-season No. 3 UCLA men's soccer team defeated Westmont College 3-0 in an exhibition game. UCLA senior midfielder Shaun Tsakiris had a hand in every goal, recording two assists and scoring a goal.
Freshman forward Adolfo Gregorio scored in the sixth minute for the only goal UCLA needed. The Bruins struck again in the 33rd minute when freshman forward Cliff McKinley made a great sliding play at the endline to save possession and then fed the ball to Tim Pierce, who crossed it to Tsakiris for an insurance goal. Senior forward McKinley Tennyson Jr. rounded out the scoring less than two minutes later when his shot hit the top of the post and bounced in.
Freshman goalkeeper DJ Countess earned the win after playing the first half, and redshirt freshman Zach Wells played well in the second half, making two saves. Westmont keeper David Jay had six second-half saves.
UCLA has one more exhibition game on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Loyola Marymount before officially opening the 2000 season on Friday, Sept. 1 vs. Butler at the Indiana adidas Classic.
