EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's tennis team played tough, but was defeated 5-4 by No. 8 UCLA at the Willow Creek Racquet Club. Oregon's record drops to 2-3 overall, with a 0-3 mark in Pac-10 play.
The Ducks split the singles matches with the Bruins. Oregon's Janice Nyland dropped the first set, but rallied to beat UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. The win is Nyland's third straight singles win. Fellow Duck, Sarah Colistro rolled over Jennifer Donahue of UCLA, 6-0, 6-0.
The Bruins clinched the victory in doubles play, winning two of the three doubles matches. The Duck duo of Sarah Colistro and Monika Gieczys fell behind 3-0 in the early stages of their match before mounting a comeback, defeating UCLA's Abigail Spears and Elizabeth Schmidt, 8-6.
"It was a good showing for us," said Oregon head coach Jack Griffin. "Across the board, I feel we battled hard. Janice (Nyland) had a big win. I think what we wanted today was to be in every point, be tough, fight hard and keep competing, and I feel we did that. Today we did one of our better jobs. If we can master the mental side of the game, the results will come. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
