LOS ANGELES -- The 24th-ranked UCLA women's basketball team used a second-half surge to defeat Arizona State 56-47 in a Pac-10 Conference game at Pauley Pavilion Thursday night.
UCLA (14-7, 8-3 in Pac-10 play) and Arizona State (13-9, 6-6) entered the second half tied at 24 after a poor first half of shooting (UCLA shot just 31.4% in the first half, ASU 36.7%). The Sun Devils took an early lead in the second stanza, 29-25 after a Kristine Sand three-pointer. However, UCLA cut the lead to one on a Maylana Martin jumper then took the lead for good on a Martin layup that put the Bruins ahead 34-33 with 13:45 to play.
After the Bruins extended their lead to five, the Sun Devils cut it to one, 42-41 with 7:59 to play. That is where forward Takiyah Jackson took control of the game for the Bruins. Jackson made two free throws at 7:47 to extend the Bruin lead to 44-41, made a steal and drove the length of the court for a layup to make it 46-41, then made another steal that led to two free throws from Erica Gomez, giving UCLA a seven-point lead with 5:40 to play. A LaCresha Flannigan jumper gave UCLA a nine-point cushion at 4:57, and the Bruins never looked back.
Martin led the Bruins with 17 points and 12 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season. Freshman guard Nicole Kaczmarski was also in double-figure scoring with 12 points and three steals. UCLA's front line was excellent on the defensive end. Along with Martin's 12 rebounds, Marie Philman contributed nine boards and four steals. Janae Hubbard had seven rebounds. Jackson had three rebounds and two steals, and Carly Funicello contributed seven rebounds and a career-high tying three blocked shots.
Rachel Holt led Arizona State with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Sand scored 11 with eight boards.
The Bruins will host No. 15 Arizona on Saturday, February 19 at 1:00 pm in Pauley Pavilion in the Fox Sports Net Pac-10 Game of the Week.
