HONOLULU, HAWAII - Junior left fielder Bill Scott's 11th home run in 10 consecutive game-days helped lift the UCLA baseball team to its second straight victory over Hawaii, 10-3 Friday night in front of 2,421 at Rainbow Stadium.
Scott's two-run shot down the left field line in the sixth inning gave the Bruins (2-0 overall) much needed assurance runs after bouncing back from a third inning 3-2 deficit. Scott led the Bruins offensively, going 4-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Junior right-hander Jon Brandt (1-0) picked up the win in his first outing this season, scattering four hits through five innings and allowing three runs, one earned. Brandt also struck out six and walked three. Junior southpaw Bobby Roe relieved Brandt in the sixth and allowed only one hit and one walk, while striking out five to earn the save.
Hawaii's (2-6 overall) Rich Snider (1-2) suffered the loss and allowed eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits. Errors plagued both teams, especially in the early innings, as UCLA made three miscues and Hawaii made four in the game.
The Bruins didn't waste any time getting on the board in the first inning. Following a one-out walk to junior third baseman Garrett Atkins and a basehit by Scott, junior first baseman Eric Reece hit into a force play moving Atkins to third. Junior catcher Forrest Johnson then hit what looked to be a routine fly out in right, when Hawaii outfielder Chad Boudon dropped the ball and Atkins scored.
Then it was Hawaii's turn to take advantage of opposing miscues. Rainbow leadoff batter Darin Baker walked and advanced to second and then third on two consecutive Bruin errors. Baker eventually scored on a basehit by Pat Scalabrini to knot the game at one.
UCLA broke the tie in the third, only to have Hawaii send seven men to the plate scoring two runs on one Bruin error. Three consecutive hits in the third inning by catcher Adam Berry (2B), center fielder Charles Merricks and shortstop Warren Trott followed by a sacrifice hit by right fielder Nick Lyon gave UCLA a 4-2 lead it would never relinquish.
Atkins was 2-5 with three runs, a double and one RBI, while Reece went 2-6 with a double, one run and two RBI. Berry went 2-3 including a double with one run and one RBI, while Merricks rounded out Bruins with multiple hits going 2-5 with one run and one RBI.
The Bruins look to complete the sweep of the Rainbows tomorrow, when sophomore right-hander Josh Karp takes the mound vs. Chad Gianetti. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m.Pacific time at Rainbow Stadium and will be broadcast live on the internet at www.broadcast.com.
