LOS ANGELES -- 19th-ranked USC men's tennis dropped a close match to top-ranked UCLA, 4-3, this afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Trojans fall to 12-6 overall this season, while the Bruins improve to 16-2.
USC began the match with a 1-0 lead after claiming two of three doubles matches. At the top spot, sixth-ranked Nicholas Rainey and Ryan Moore upset fourth-ranked Jong-Min Lee and Brandon Kramer in a 9-8, 7-3 tiebreaker. Patrick Gottesleben and Daniel Langre claimed a 9-7 victory over Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer at the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point.
UCLA tied the score (1-1) after the first singles match as Rojer defeated Rainey, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4. The Trojans followed with victories at No. 1 and 5, while UCLA earned wins at No. 3 and 6, tieing the score at 3 apiece.
The contest came down to the No. 2 singles match where No. 76 Andrew Park faced No. 36 Kramer. Kramer claimed the first set, 3-6, and jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second. Park quickly answered by tieing the score as the two continued to alternate with the lead. Though UCLA was the first to reach match point, 6-5, Park posted the following point to force the contest into a second-set tiebreaker. Kramer clinched the match for the Bruins with a 3-6, 6-7 (4-7) final score.
