Men's Tennis Falls to Host San Diego in NCAA Second Round

SAN DIEGO โ The UCLA men's tennis team had its season ended Saturday in the NCAA Championship second round, dropping a 4-0 decision to host and 15th-seeded San Diego at Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Bruins, who beat Arizona State 4-0 in Friday's opening round, finish with an 18-8 record.
The Toreros (22-5) got off on the right foot with a pair of doubles wins. Stian Klaassen/Oliver Tarvet started by beating Spencer Johnson/Bengt Reinhard 6-2 on Court 2. The 34th-ranked partnership of Adrien Berrut/Lambert Ruland then locked up the first point with a 6-3 victory against Andy Nguyen/Aadarsh Tripathi up top.
San Diego collected five singles first sets, with Nguyen accounting for UCLA's one. His match would be stopped in a third set. The Bruins forced two third sets. Those were also left unfinished.
Ruland topped Tripathi 6-3, 6-2 on Court 4 to grow the Toreros' lead. No. 19 Tarvet then outlasted No. 56 Johnson 6-4, 7-5 on Court 1 to put his team one point away from the overall win.
A tiebreaker decided the clinching point, with Klaassen collecting it on Court 3. He bested No. 40 van Loben Sels 6-2, 7-6(3), putting San Diego in the super-regional round.
