The UCLA athletic department held its second annual "Big Dance" Monday at Pauley Pavilion. The Dance, which featured a basketball supershot competition, a karaoke contest and dancing, was sponsored by the Bruin Athletic Council and the athletic department.
For the second consecutive year, men's tennis All-American Jean-Noel Grinda was a member of the winning supershot team. Grinda teamed with Joe Franklin from the men's track and field team and Natalie Jarrett from the women's basketball team.
In a closely contested karaoke competition, women's basketball players Kristee Porter, Shalada Allen, Malika Leatham and Stacy Robertson won in a three-way, sing-off over the gymnastics team and football star Kenyon Coleman. All three acts had tied for first with perfect scores for their original performance.
Also presented Monday was the C.H.A.M.P.S. Inspirational Award, given annually to a male and female student-athlete who has overcome personal adversity, injury or illness while achieving athletic success. This year's recepients were softball's Courtney Dale and football's Tony White.
