Defending NCAA men's volleyball champion UCLA evened its overall record at 2-2 Saturday night after sweeping UC Irvine in the final match of the Wyndham Garden Hotels West Coast Chellenge.

The Bruins won 30-27, 30-28, 30-26.

Senior Mark Williams led UCLA with 17 kills (.517) and a pair of aces and sophomore Cameron Mount added 13 kills. Freshman Libero Adam Shrader had seven digs, a career high.

"He (Shrader) is getting better every game," said Head Coach Al Scates. "I also was impressed by Mark Williams, who seemed to get stronger as the weekend progressed."

Four UCLA starters, including Williams, were sidelined by the flu last week.

For the second straight match, senior setter Dan Conners guided the Bruins to victory. Conners recorded 44 set assists in the victory over UCI, eclipsing the personal record he set in the morning match against Cal State Northridge.

"We hit .411 as a team," said Scates. "Conners is a fifth year player who did a nice job out there. He set his first [career] match against Cal State Northridge. He does everything I tell him."

After one day of practice this week, the Bruins will prepare for the Outrigger Hotels Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawai'i Jan. 17-19, in Honolulu. UCLA is the three-time defending champion of the event.
