The sixth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team came from behind in every game to sweep NAIA Cal Baptist Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins won 30-26, 30-21, 30-28 before 427 in one hour and 22 minutes.
Junior Ian Burnham led the Bruins with 15 kills (.440), followed by freshman J.T. Wenger, who came off the bench and slammed eight kills (.400).
Sophomore Rafael Paal led the Lancers (4-6) with 24 kills (.318).
Because the match was an exhibition it did not count on the Bruins' overall record.
Burnham served two balls that hit the tape late in Game 1 that helped the Bruins erase a deficit and gain momentum. The first fell for an ace and the second threw the Lancers into enough disarray that they lost the point. After Cal Baptist called timeout, the Bruins scored the next three points to take the game, 30-26.
In Game 2, the Bruins trailed 10-7 before they scored three straight points on a block by senior Adam Naeve, a kill by Wenger and a hitting error by Paal. From there, UCLA outscored Cal Baptist 20-14, including the final four points.
In Game 3, the Bruins trailed 24-21 before Wenger ignited a comeback that saw the score tied at 25-25 after junior Matt Komer's kill. A service error by Cal Baptist and a kill by sophomore Greg Coon gave the Bruins a 27-25 lead that they never relinquished.
UCLA returns to MPSF action Sat., Feb. 3, traveling to Pepperdine for a 7:30 p.m. match.
