UCLA Women's Water Polo Cruises To Easy Victories

Stanford, CA - The top-seeded UCLA women's water polo team opened the 2001 season in dominating fashion with wins over Calgary and San Jose State at the Stanford Invitational.
On Saturday morning, UCLA routed the Calgary Renegades 20-5 in the tournament's first game of the day. The Bruins were led by junior Eleanor Murphy, who scored a career-high four goals. Junior Kelly Heuchan and freshman Natalie Golda each had three goals while junior Elaine Zivich, freshman Thalia Munro and sophomore Robin Beauregard notched two goals a piece. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Hipp had six saves for the Bruins.
In the afternoon game against San Jose State, the Bruins picked up where they left off, winning by a 15-4 margin. The Bruins were up 10-0 before the Spartans got on the board, and by the end of the game, 10 different players had scored for UCLA. The Bruins were led by Natalie Golda, who scored three goals for the second straight game. Hipp picked up nine more saves in the Bruin victory.
UCLA will play California in the first semifinal game at 10 am Sunday morning. The winner will move on to play in the championship game at 5:30 pm while the loser will play in the third-place game at 4:20 pm.
