Bruins Batter Rainbows Again, 12-2
February 03, 2001 | Baseball
Jon Brandt got the start on the mound and was solid through five innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run, a solo home run in the first inning. He struck out four batters before leaving the game with UCLA ahead 10-1.
The bats were hot for the second day, as the Bruins scored four runs in the top of the second. Randall Shelley and Eric Reece started the inning with singles, and Adam Berry doubled to center field, scoring Shelley and Reece. Ryan Rasmussen singled to center field, sending Berry home. Matt Pearl doubled to left center to score Rasmussen for the fourth run of the inning.
Reece had a two RBI single in the fifth to give the Bruins a 6-0 lead. The offensive display continued in the fifth, as Ben Francisco had a three RBI double to score Rasmussen, Preston Griffin and Pearl. A double by Brian Baron sent Francisco home to increase the lead to 10-1.
Freshman pitcher Mike Davern relieved Brandt in the bottom of the sixth and allowed two hits and struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief.
Freshman Casey Janssen made his first collegiate at bat a memorable one, as he hit a two run home run over the right field wall. He is the first Bruin to hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat since Matt Schwenke hit a grand slam in his first at bat in 1991.
Mike Kunes and Doug Silva pitched the last two innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits.
The Bruins take on Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at 5:00 pm in their home opener.
