Martin's Heroics Lift No. 1 UCLA Over Sacramento State, 6-5
April 24, 2026 | Baseball
Down 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Bruins (38-3) loaded the bases with two outs before Martin shot a grounder that slipped under the first baseman's glove, pulling UCLA even. Cholowsky never stopped running, and when the throw from the second baseman kicked away to the backstop, the Bruins' star shortstop trotted home to seal the dramatic win.
Martin's ninth-inning knock was his third of the ballgame, leading the Bruins with a 3-for-5 night at the plate. Payton Brennan and Phoenix Call each tallied two hits, and Mulivai Levu launched his 11th homer of the season in a 1-for-4 effort.
Dean West, Trey Gudoy, and Aiden Aguayo each recorded a hit for the Bruins.
Ian May was outstanding out of the bullpen, firing 2.2 hitless, scoreless innings with four strikeouts to steady UCLA on the mound.
Sacramento State struck first, turning a leadoff double into a run in the second. UCLA answered immediately with a three-run burst in the home half. After a walk to Cashel Dugger and a Brennan double down the right-field line, Gudoy punched a two-run single through the left side, and West added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
The Hornets clawed back with a solo homer from Erick Dessens in the fourth, then moved in front with a two-run fifth and an insurance run in the sixth, stringing together a two-out double and single.
UCLA's comeback began in the eighth when Levu drilled a solo shot off the right-field foul pole to cut the deficit to one. Sacramento State threatened to add on in the ninth, putting two runners in scoring position with one out, but Justin Lee entered and slammed the door with a strikeout and a flyout to keep it a one-run game.
Aguayo opened the bottom of the ninth with a sharp pinch-hit single up the middle, moved to second on Call's sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a groundout. Cholowsky and Levu then worked back-to-back walks to set the stage for Martin's heroics. The UCLA third baseman shot a grounder just past the diving first baseman to tie the game, and when the throw home skipped away into foul territory, Cholowsky raced in from second to score the winning run and complete the Bruins' walk-off rally.
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium for the second game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Live coverage will be available on B1G+.
