FRESNO, CA - The top-ranked UCLA softball team opened play at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic in Fresno, CA, on Thursday evening with an 8-0 win over Colorado. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 29-0, while the Rams fall to 3-17 on the season.

Bruin senior Courtney Dale pitched five and a third perfect innings before hitting ram first baseman Eileen Hannigan with a pitch in the bottom of the sixth. Dale would keep the no-hitter going into the bottom of the seventh, when right fielder Brooke Boyer led off with a single through the circle.

UCLA opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, when centerfielder Amanda Freed led off with a single to left field, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by shortstop Natasha Watley, and came home on an RBI single by Tairia Mims.

The 1-0 lead would hold until the fourth inning, when UCLA would add three more runs on a double by Stacey Nuveman, a single by Dale that scored pinch-runner Julie Hoshizaki from second base, and a Claire Sua double that scored pinch-runner Erin Rahn. Sua and left fielder Stephanie Ramos would also score in the inning to improve the Bruin lead to 5-0.

UCLA completed its offense in the top of the seventh with a single and stolen base from Watley, an RBI single by Mims, a walk to Nuveman , RBI single by Dale. The Bruins added an eighth and final run when second baseman Crissy Buck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

After six no-hit innings, Dale returned to the circle in the bottom of the seventh, allowing one run on two hits. Dale is 3-0 on the season with the 8-1 win.

The Bruins return to action on Friday morning with an 11 am first pitch against Cal Poly and a scheduled 3 pm start against No. 11 DePaul at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic.
