During the annual cross-town rivalry track meet between UCLA and USC on Saturday, May 4, UCLA took pride in hosting over 5,000 children as part of their "I'm Going to College" Program. Elementary, middle, and high school students arrived a few hours early to take part in various pre-meet activities including campus tours, face-painting, a student-athlete autograph session with the Football and Men's Soccer teams, football throwing contests, and a special appearance by UCLA dance group - Bodythm. The students helped to fill Drake Stadium as both the Men's and the Women's teams defeated SC.

UCLA student volunteers and athletes joined together to once again make "I'm Going to College" a raving success. The enthusiasm for the event and the program was evident from the smiles on all the participants' faces.

UCLA Athletics offers "I'm Going to College" activities at various athletic events throughout the school year. Operating through Southern California school systems, the program touches thousands of students each year. Participants are given the opportunity to gain a better understanding of college life and the excitement of Division I NCAA Athletics.

Debra Schneider, director of the "I'm Going to College" Program, and her staff continue to make this incredible program available to students year after year. The May 4th Track & Field meet was the final event for 2001-2002 school year, but there will be many more to come during the 2002-2003 school year beginning with the September 21st football game when the Bruins take on the Colorado Buffalos at the Rose Bowl.

If you would like to involve your school with the "I'm Going to College" Program, please contact the Athletics for Youth Office at (310) 206-5990 for more information.
