UCLA graduates its student-athletes within six years at a higher rate than the national average for Division IA schools or public universities, according to figures released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) today.

1995-96 Freshman Class

According to the 2002 NCAA Graduation Rate report, which studies the freshman class of 1995-96, the national average for Division IA schools for that freshman class was 60% and the Division I public school average was 55%.

In contrast, UCLA's graduation rate for the 1995-96 freshman class was 73%, third highest among Pac-10 schools. The men graduated at a 68% rate and the women graduated at a 76% rate. The national Division IA averages were 53% and 70%, respectively, while the Division I public school averages were 48% and 66%, respectively.

In the sport of football, UCLA's rate for the 1995-96 freshman class was 75.0%, third highest among Pac-10 schools. The national average for Division IA was 53% overall and the Division I public school average was 47%.

In the sport of men's basketball, UCLA's graduation rate for the 1995-96 freshman class was 50.0%, second (tied) among Pac-10 schools. The national average for Division IA was 36% overall and the Division I public school average was 35%.

Four-Year Average of 1992-93 through 1995-96 Freshman Classes

According to that same report, the national average for Division IA schools for the four freshman classes between 1992-93 and 1995-96 was 59% and the Division I public school average was 54%.

In contrast, UCLA's graduation rate for those four freshman classes was 62%, fourth highest among Pac-10 schools. The men graduated at a 55% rate and the women graduated at a 72% rate. The national Division IA averages were 52% and 70%, respectively, while the Division I public school averages were 47% and 65%, respectively.
