The UCLA men's volleyball team defeated USC, 3-1, Friday in the first round of the 39th annual UCSB/Elephant Bar Tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara.

The Bruins won 30-25, 32-34, 30-27, 30-24 in one hour and 51 minutes.

The victory raised UCLA's record to 1-0. USC fell to 0-1.

Sophomore outside hitter Jonathan Acosta led UCLA with 20 kills, followed by 15 kills from opposite Allan Vince. Quick hitter Matt Shubin added eight kills (.667).

The Bruins advance to the second round against CS Northridge Saturday at 10 a.m.
