Marina del Rey, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team swept all three races in today's contest versus Long Beach State. The Bruins challenged unfavorable conditions, including moderate precipitation, variable wind speeds and a fast downstream current in Ballona Creek.

In the Women's Novice Eights, the Bruins finished first and second over the 49ers. A drifting start caused the race to be slightly less than 2000m. The UCLA N8 crew won with an official time of 5:22. The UCLA 2N8 finished at 5:32 and Long Beach State at 5:46.

In the Women's 2V Eights, the Bruins defeated the 49ers by an 8-second differential. UCLA posted an official time of 6:53, and Long Beach State finished at 7:01.

For safety concerns on the creek, the women's varsity race was moved to the marina. There, the varsity eights scrimmaged, and the Bruins came out on top by a 12-second split. No official times were recorded.

Directly following the meet, two eights were christened. The first was named the "Still Brothers," honoring former Bruin alumni, USA Olympians, and elite national and international rowers, Kevin and Mike Still.

The second eight was a surprise christening and was named the "Bobby Field," in recognition of the support and contribution of Assistant Athletic Director Bob Field to the sport of UCLA women's rowing.

The Bruins next compete on Saturday, March 22, at the Berg Cup in Newport Beach, Calif.
