Bruins Finish Fifth at Big Ten Championship Regatta
May 17, 2026 | Women's Rowing
INDIANAPOLIS – UCLA Women's Rowing finished fifth overall at the 2026 Big Ten Rowing Championships presented by Allstate, improving from last year's ninth-place finish.
Kaija Frassrand and Liana Hoffman were named First Team All-Big Ten for their efforts in the 1V8+ shell; Siena McDermott was also tabbed Second Team All-Big Ten. Captain Danielle DeFrancisci was named UCLA's Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree for the second-consecutive season.
Six of UCLA's seven shells qualified for grand finals out of Friday's set of races at the conference postseason regatta.
In the face of rapid change, the Bruins had a strong showing on their first day on the water and adapted to a new weekend racing schedule. The conference called a meeting Friday ahead of anticipated inclement weather for the original Saturday slate; Big Ten coaches agreed to move heats up to the late afternoon of Friday, May 15, to avoid complications on the course the next day.
Five of UCLA's boats finished second in their Friday heats to set up an exciting championship Sunday for the Bruins. UCLA's 1V8+ headlined Friday's finishers, placing second in the final heat of the eight-person crews.
The fourth and first varsity eights started off the action with back-to-back fourth place finishes in the early races on championship Sunday.
UCLA's 2V8+, which was the only shell in petite finals Sunday, bounced back and displayed strong mental fortitude in its second race of the weekend. The second varsity eight captured first place in its final, fighting off Minnesota and Indiana down the course.
The fours battled Michigan in each of the three races that followed. The Wolverines got the best of the Bruins in the first and second varsity fours, but UCLA bested Michigan in the third varsity four to add 18 points to the team's total. The third varsity eight wrapped UCLA's morning on the water with a fourth-place finish in the grand finals.
UCLA scored 227 points, trailing No. 16-ranked Ohio State (3rd, 266 points) and No. 17-ranked Michigan (4th, 255 points). Washington repeated as Big Ten Champions and Rutgers was again runner-up in the conference finale.
