Former UCLA Quarterback and current voice of Bruin Football Matt Stevens brought his trademark Bruin enthusiasm to the Team Prime Time-WSA Cup Football/Volleyball Tournament on Friday March 12th. Over the course of the memorable afternoon Stevens starred as everything from inspirational speaker to official referee and at one point, much to his surprise, even had his jersey retired.

Proudly decked out in his Blue and Gold, Stevens launched the event by speaking passionately to the more than 100 students from Team Prime Time in attendance about the importance of the "4 C's" he learned as a Bruin Football Player. Communication, Character, Confidence and Conviction, Stevens said, are rules he still lives by today. As sixth grader Walter Thompson observed, "I can do the 4 'C's.' It doesn't seem that hard the way Matt breaks it down."

Stevens then coolly refereed the hotly contested championship football game between the Prime Time squads from Palms and Webster Middle Schools. An equally competitive girls volleyball game between teams from the same schools took place on an adjacent court. Webster emerged victorious in both games to reclaim the coveted CUP.

Perhaps the most emotional moment of the afternoon occurred at halftime as Steven' #11 jersey became the first jersey ever to be hung in Team Prime Time's hallowed Hall of Fame, an honor reserved for those who give freely of themselves on behalf of the at-risk middle schools students in the after-school program. "Team Prime Time gives these kids so many reasons to believe in themselves," Stevens said between duties, "They can count on me anytime. Besides, no one has ever retired my jersey before."

Prior to becoming one of the most recognized television and radio personalities in the Southland, Stevens starred as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in UCLA's history. As a Junior, Stevens led the Bruins to a Rose Bowl win over Illinois; a year later, he guided the Bruins to a decisive victory over BYU in the Freedom Bowl.
