Petrina Long has been named associate athletic director/senior women's administrator at UCLA, Bruin athletic director Dan Guerrero announced today. She succeeds Betsy Stephenson, who has been named director of athletics and recreation at Emory University.
"Petrina is an outstanding fit for UCLA," said Guerrero. "She possesses outstanding management skills and builds outstanding working relationships. She has participated in virtually every facet of athletics management, from supervising operational areas and sports to working with the NCAA and national committees and she is familiar with the University of California system. I have seen her abilities first-hand and I am pleased she has decided to join our staff at UCLA."
The new Bruin senior women's administrator will oversee several men's and women's sports, including women's basketball, men's and women's volleyball, softball and women's gymnastics. She will also oversee several administrative areas, including academic services. She will assume her new duties on June 14.
Long comes to UCLA from UC Irvine, where she has served as senior associate athletic director/senior women's administrator since 1993, working closely with Guerrero prior to his becoming UCLA's athletic director in July of 2002. She also served as interim athletic director following his departure to UCLA.
"I am excited to be part of an outstanding athletics management team at UCLA," said Long. "Working at UC Irvine has been the best part of my career and I wouldn't leave for any job except the chance to be reunited with Dan Guerrero and to work at an institution with UCLA's athletic and academic reputation was an opportunity I could not pass up."
During her 11 years at UCI, Long has supervised several of the university's 23 sports teams, as well as academic and student support, compliance and sports medicine.
Long was active in numerous groups on campus and in the community. Her campus activities include serving on the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics (CACIA), and recently chairing the Diversity Development Program Board for two years. She was a board member of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce for several years and has been a school volunteer in the city of Tustin.
Long was a member of the Big West Council and previously chaired the Big West Compliance Committee for two years. She has been serving on the Executive Committee of both the Big West Conference and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Prior to her tenure at UCI, Long spent nine years at Columbia University, serving in both the associate and assistant athletic director positions. She was the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Affairs at Southern Methodist University from 1982-84 and was an advisor for student-athletes at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1979-82.
Long received her B.A. degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1977 and her Master's degree in Anthropology from Columbia in 1992.
She and her husband, Sam McCamey, have a daughter, Samantha, and two sons, Monte and Traland.
