Athens, Greece - UCLA athletes competed in softball, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, water polo, baseball and in the men's shot put on Wednesday in Athens. UCLA grad Lisa Fernandez homered in USA Softball's victory over Canada while the all-Bruin beach volleyball pair of Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs completed preliminary round play with a spotless record. Former Bruin Nick Theodorou is playing for the host country, Greece, in Athens. Theodorou is playing shortstop for the Greek. In Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Canada, Theodorou hit leadoff, going 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in the game.

Men's Beach Volleyball
The Australian beach volleyball tandem of Mark Williams (UCLA '01) and Julien Prosser won their second pool play competition at the Athens Olympics Wednesday afternoon. For a complete recap, click HERE.

Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygaard, the United States' top-seeded team in the men's Beach Volleyball competition, exited the Athens Olympics without a victory Wednesday. The pair finished the pool play with a 0-3 mark after losing 16-21, 21-13, 15-13 to Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel of Switzerland Wednesday afternoon. For a complete recap, click HERE.

Women's Beach Volleyball
UCLA's Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs (United States) protected their seed on Tuesday evening at the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre by rallying for a win over Nicole Schnyder and Simone Kuhn of Switzerland. The win was their third in Pool D play and advances the pair to the 16-team, single-elimination bracket to determine the medal winners. Softball
UCLA Alumnae featured prominently in Team USA's 7-0 run-rule victory over Canada on Wednesday in Athens. Shortstop Natasha Watley went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, Stacey Nuveman was 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, while catching a nine-strikeout performance from Jennie Finch who was in the circle. Playing third base and hitting fourth on the day, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and UCLA graduate Lisa Fernandez was 3-for-4 on the day, including a solo home run, two RBIs and a run scored in the game. Track and Field - Men's Shot Put
Former Bruin and two-time American Olympic medalist John Godina (Mesa, Ariz.) finished ninth in the 2004 Olympic Games in the shot put on Wednesday in Olympia. The shot put was contested in the ruins of Olympia with close to 15,000 spectators in attendance. Godina posted his only legal throw in the third round with a toss of 20.19m/66-3, which placed him ninth - just one position shy of making the cut of the top eight throwers who get three more attempts each. The field announcer had declared Godina needed a throw of 20.07m/65-10.25 to make the cut, but Godina's hopes were dashed when he discovered he was ninth. For a complete recap, click HERE.
Women's Indoor Volleyball
Team USA was upset by the Dominican Republic on Wednesday morning, 3-2, with game scores of 26-24, 25-22, 25-27, 23-25, 19-17. UCLA's Wiz Bachman did not play in the match.
Women's Water Polo
With the help of goals from Kelly Rulon and Robin Beauregard, the U.S. women built up a solid lead in its second contest of the 2004 Olympic Games, but they were unable to stop a late surge by Canada on Wednesday at the Olympic Aquatic Centre Indoor Pool.
