Athens, Greece - UCLA athletes competed in softball, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, men's water polo, and women's gymnastics at the Olympic Games on Thursday in Athens, Greece. Lisa Fernandez and the USA Softball team provided the day's highlight with a 7-0 shutout over Greece.

Softball
Two-time Olympic gold medalist and UCLA graduate Lisa Fernandez, utilized her skills on both sides of the field today as she led the U.S. to its fourth run-rule victory with a 7-0 win against host Greece. Going 2-for-2 from the plate with an RBI, as well as a one-hit performance from the circle, Fernandez totaled five strikeouts to move Team USA to 6-0 in competition, which secures a spot in the medal round.

Beach Volleyball
The U.S. team of Stein Metzger (UCLA '96) and Dax Holdren lost its final preliminary match to Brazil's duo of Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos in the Beach Volleyball competition of the Athens Olympics. Rego and Santos won, 21-17, 21-10, to advance undefeated into the medal round. The U.S. pair, which finished second in its pool, also advanced.

Men's Water Polo
The U.S. men's water polo team absorbed its first loss of the 2004 Olympic Games at the hands of reigning World and Olympic champion Hungary. UCLA senior Brett Ormsby scored scored his first Olympic goal and former Bruin goalie Brandon Brooks made 11 saves in the losing effort.

Women's Gymnastics
UCLA junior gymnast Kate Richardson (Coquitlam, BC) battled back from a rough first rotation to secure a Top 20 placement in the all-around finals at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Richardson finished in 18th place with an all-around total of 35.786.
