Athens, Greece - Former UCLA volleyball players Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs of the USA and Mark Williams of Australia advanced to the quarterfinals on the beach, Erik Sullivan and the USA men advanced indoors, Shelia Burrell placed fourth in the heptathlon, and Sheena Johnson advanced to the semifinals of the 400m hurdles in Day Eight of the 2004 Olympics Games.

Women's Beach Volleyball
Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs advanced to the quarterfinals of the Olympic beach volleyball tournament Saturday with a straight-set victory in their medal-round opener. The fourth-ranked McPeak and Youngs defeated 12th-seeded Czech pair Eva Celbova and Sona Novakova 21-16, 21-16.

Men's Beach Volleyball
Mark Williams (UCLA '01) and Julien Prosser of Australia advanced to the quarterfinals of the Olympic Beach Volleyball competition Saturday with a 2-0 victory over the team from South Africa at the Athens Olympics.

Men's Indoor Volleyball
Erik Sullivan and the USA men's volleyball team advanced to the medal round after a 25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19 victory over Australia, coupled with Italy's win over the Netherlands. The Americans (2-2) finish the preliminaries Monday against Brazil -- the world's top-ranked team.


Baseball
Greece won for the first time ever in Olympic baseball, getting 14 hits from its Greek-American lineup to beat Italy, 12-7. UCLA alum Nick Theodorou did not play.


Men's Water Polo
The USA Men's Water Polo Team missed out on a shot at securing early advancement to the quarterfinals in a 9-7 loss to Russia on Saturday night (August 21) before 4,108 fans at the Indoor Pool of the Olympic Aquatic Centre in Athens. Former Bruin Adam Wright scored a goal, and goalkeeper Brandon Brooks made five saves.

Track & Field
Sheena Johnson advanced to the semifinals in the 400m hurdles by placing second in her heat in a time of 54.81. She had the eighth-fastest time overall. In the 100m semifinals, Gail Devers placed seventh (11.22) and did not qualify for the finals. In the heptathlon, Shelia Burrell placed fourth with 6296 points, 128 points behind third-place Kelly Sotherton. Michelle Perry placed 14th with 6124 points.

On the men's side, Ato Boldon placed fourth in his first round heat in the 100m with a time of 10.41 and did not qualify for the next round.
