Athens, Greece - Hurdler Joanna Hayes and beach volleyball players Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs increased UCLA's medal count to 10 at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Hayes won the 100m hurdles in Olympic record time, and McPeak and youngs teamed to win a bronze medal on the beach. Also in action Tuesday were the USA women's water polo and volleyball teams.

Track & Field
Bruin alumnus Joanna Hayes (1999) captured her first Olympic title on Tuesday after winning the 100m hurdles in a new Olympic Record time of 12.37. Her gold medal is UCLA's sixth of these Games.

Beach Volleyball
UCLA alumnae Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs were the first American team to win a Beach Volleyball medal match as they scored a 21-17 and 21-16 win over fifth-seeded Natalie Cook and Nicole Sanderson in 71 minutes to net the bronze medal before a capacity crowd of 10,000 at the Olympic Beach Centre.

Women's Volleyball
The United States indoor women's volleyball team saw its tournament come to an end on Tuesday in Athens as Team USA fell to Brazil in five games, with scores of 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 25-27, 15-6. UCLA's Wiz Bachman did not play in the match. The U.S. had advanced to the quarterfinals with an upset sweep of defending gold medalist Cuba in the final preliminary round match two days ago.

Women's Water Polo
The U.S. women missed a shot at gold by two seconds on Tuesday, falling 6-5 to world No. 2 Italy in the Olympic semifinals at the Olympic Aquatic Centre Main Pool. The United States is in a rematch of the 2000 Olympic final, facing 2000 gold-medalist Australia in the bronze-medal game at 5 p.m. Athens time on Thursday (August 26). Bruin Thalia Munro scored one goal. Kelly Rulon, Amber Stachowski, and Robin Beauregard were also important players in this very physical game.
