LOS ANGELES - Cal's Stephanie Weiger scored a golden goal in the 105th minute of double overtime Sunday, helping the Golden Bears earn a 1-0 victory over No. 7 UCLA in a Pac-10 women's soccer match at UCLA's Drake Stadium. With the victory, Cal improves to 9-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference. The Bruins fall to 11-5 and 4-2 in Pac-10 play.
The official time of the goal was 104:46. Weiger gathered a ball in the UCLA box and was able to turn and get a right-footed shot off just past the outstretched hands of UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson.
Prior to the game-winning goal, both teams had chances to get on the board in regulation. Cal had an excellent opportunity in the 33rd minute when Caroline Lea hit a shot that bounced off the left post and back into play. Dania Cabello ran onto the rebound and blasted another shot that hit the crossbar before being cleared by a Bruin defender. The Bears almost scored again in the 86th minute off a shot by Elizabeth Eisenberg, however the ball was cleared off the line by Amy Fazio.
UCLA's best opportunity to score came in the 56th minute when Danesha Adams headed in a goal that was called back due to an obstruction penalty.
The Bruins entered the day with a five-match winning streak over Cal dating back to 1999.
UCLA will look to rebound next week, traveling to Arizona for matches against Arizona State on Friday and Arizona on Sunday.
