LOS ANGELES - Five UCLA men's tennis players advanced to the second round of singles play Thursday at the 48th Annual Southern California Intercollegiates Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.

UCLA's top-seeded Luben Pampoulov and second-seeded Alberto Francis, both advanced in straight sets. Pampoulov knocked off USC's Kaes Van't Hof, 6-2, 6-4. Francis was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over UC Irvine's Olof Sjolund. In addition to Pampoulov and Francis, three other Bruins moved into the second round Thursday, as Philipp Gruendler, eighth-seeded Kris Kwinta and Mathieu Dehaine all won first-round matches.

Three Bruin players lost in the first round, as seventh-seeded Chris Lam fell upset to UCI's Brian Morton, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. Jason Nguyen and Jeremy Drean also fell in the opening round.

Play continues on Friday with the first round of doubles also set to begin.
