
Bruins Return to the Victory Column

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team defeated Div. III UC San Diego 3-1 Friday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match for both teams.
The Bruins won 28-30, 30-18, 30-18, 30-24 in 106 minutes before 349 fans at Pauley Pavilion. The victory raised UCLA's record to 11-2 overall, 6-2 in league play. The Tritons fell to 5-6, 2-4.
Coach Al Scates went to his bench early and the move paid off as senior opposite Marcin Jagoda stepped in and hammered a career-high 23 kills (.462) and added nine digs and four total blocks. Senior Chris Pe?a added 20 kills in 30 swings without an error for a percentage of .667. He also recorded four total blocks and two aces. Senior libero Adam Shrader contributed a season-high of 13 digs, and sophomore setter Dennis Gonzalez recorded a career-high of 66 set assists and added two block assists and an ace.
Sophomore Jeff Urton led the Tritons with 15 kills (.375) and two block assists.
Next home match for the Bruins is Wed., Feb. 18 against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
