Madison, Wis. - The No. 11 UCLA women's tennis team turned in a strong performance against No. 10 North Carolina on Thursday, defeating the Tar Heels 5-2 in the opening round of play at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin. With the victory, UCLA improves to 2-1 on the year and will meet top-seeded Stanford in the second round on Friday.

The Bruins started the afternoon with victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles positions for the early 1-0 advantage in the match.

UNC quickly came back in singles play however, tying the match at one apiece when Sara Anundsen defeated Bruin junior Sarah Gregg, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. The Bruins then reclaimed the lead when Jackie Carleton, ranked No. 17 in the country, defeated 35th-ranked Aniela Mojzis, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-3 at the No. 1 position.

The Tar Heels would tie the match again when Caitlin Collins outlasted Bruin sophomore Feriel Esseghir, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. That was as close as UNC would come, as the Bruins then posted three-straight victories to close out the match.

The match was clinched at the No. 6 position where Lauren Fisher, seeing her first singles action in over a year, defeated Jenna Long, 6-3, 6-1.

The Bruins and Cardinal will face off at 3:00 p.m. (CST) tomorrow.
